Tickets for the final weeks in Sydney of the hit musical production Annie go on sale today. The ever popular Broadway musical Annie, starring Anthony Warlow, Nancye Hayes, Todd McKenney, Chloe Dallimore, Julie Goodwin and Alan Jones as President Roosevelt, opened at the Lyric Theatre, The Star on January 5, and will play its last performance in Sydney on Sunday March 25, before it moves on to Brisbane and Melbourne.
Producer John Frost is thrilled with the production, saying, “Annie has always been a firm favourite of mine, and I’m so glad Sydney has taken this production to its heart. Over 100,000 tickets have been sold, and audiences of all ages are loving the show. The Brisbane and Melbourne seasons are selling very strongly as well. Australians are hungry for good quality entertainment and Annie delivers this in spades.”
NSW Minister for Tourism, Major Events, and the Arts, George Souris, congratulated the producers of Annie on the show’s successful Sydney premiere and positive reception by enthusiastic audiences.
“Annie has been a wonderful addition to a busy slate of world-class productions showing in our city and highlights Sydney’s re-emergence as the musicals capital of Australia. The success of Annie also confirms the Government’s strategy of pursuing major events to rebuild the NSW economy. Destination NSW estimates that the direct economic impact from internationally renowned musicals is around $3 million per month in new money for the State or close to $20 million over a 6 month run,” Mr Souris said.
Based on the popular Harold Gray comic strip “Little Orphan Annie”, the musical Annie burst into popularity in 1977 when it opened on Broadway. After running there for nearly six years, it has played in over 22 countries worldwide including the UK, Argentina, Japan, Germany, Sweden, Spain and Australia. Annie became a smash-hit movie musical in 1982 starring Aileen Quinn, Albert Finney and Carol Burnett that is adored worldwide and a fixture of popular culture references.
Annie is full of toe-tapping hits such as It’s the Hard Knock Life, Easy Street, You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile, NYC, Maybe and of course, Tomorrow. These wonderful songs have become staples of musical theatre repertoires worldwide and now, 34 years on, it remains one of the most loved and universally appealing musicals of all time.
